India

Map of IndiaOasis has been working with communities in India since the early 1990's. In the years it's been there work has expanded rapidly across the country and there are now over 15 established projects working with people excluded from society -  from street children to women trapped in prostitution.

Shanoo's Story

Children smiling12 year old Shanoo lived with her drug addict father at Kurla railway station. When Ashadeep moved their centre from Thane to Kurla, Shanoo was one of the first girls to come into the centre.

Initially extremely quiet and shy, she did not interact with anyone. Over time she gradually became more comfortable with people and she soon began to go to the centre everyday just to take a bath and wash her clothes.

After a while, the team spoke to Shanoo's father about placing her in a home for girls which would enable her to go to school. After much hesitation, he eventually agreed to allow the team to place her at Anugrah Home for Girls at Ambernath.

When Shanoo's father visited her after a couple of months he was happy to see her going to school and progressing well in her studies.
