Education

Poverty has many guises. Most obvious is economic poverty, where people don’t have the basic resources to live. Just as devastating though is poverty of choice, where people are unable to change their situation because no other options are available.

Education can change that - whether it is becoming literate, accessing regular schooling or learning to use a computer - that is why it is a key part of what we do in providing options for those who have none.

Chipo's Story

ChipoChipo is 6 years old. He lives with his stepmother, but like so many children whose families have been ravaged by HIV/AIDS in Zimabwe, he felt unwanted. When Chipo joined the Oasis pre-school he was very fearful and couldn’t control his bladder. It was several months before he came out of his shell and began to join in with activities. Slowly but surely he made progress and responded to the gentle approach of his teachers. Chipo finished the year gaining a pre-school completion certificate that has helped him enter Grade 1 of a local elementary school, where he is today.
